Volunteer Briefing, Sign-up

Science Expeditions will be delighted to accept your offer to volunteer to help with our exciting April 3 kickoff event. Here's how it works.
  1. You read about the various volunteer tasks here. They are divided into three time periods, before, during and after the public event, which runs from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
  2. If you are sure you want to volunteer, you sign up as a Science Alliance Team Member, if you are not already signed up. Then you are returned here. If you are already a team member, you need to login before returning to this page and choosing a task.
  3. Please choose no more than one task per time period. You can, of course, volunteer for a task in each of the three time periods.
  4. After making sure the task which interests you still needs volunteers, you click on the "sign-up" link for the task you have chosen, and a form pops up with your username and bulleted-out password already entered. (If your username does not show up, you need to login or register.)
  5. On the form that pops up, you push the "I volunteer" button.
  6. That's it! Show up at the time and place described in the task description.
  7. You can check whether you are on the list for the task you selected by returning to that task on this page.

Job description: Set up the 30 or so tables for the Exploration Stations. (A small number of stations will get two tables. Position tables at Stations. Please arrive by 8:30 a.m. (Skirting and covering the tables is a separate task. See below.) Need: 4 people. Already signed up:

Job description: Upwards of 35 chairs need to be distributed and set up. Please arrive by 10:00 a.m.Need: 2 people. Already signed up:

Job description: Set up poster stands for the 22 Exploration Stations. Poster stands are already partially built out of pvc pipe. No tools required -- they "pop" together. Does not include fiberboard. Position stands at Stations. Please arrive by 9:00 a.m.Need: 2 people. Already signed up:

Job description: Make sure each Exploration Station that needs electricity has enough power. Run extension cords, plug in power strips, tape extension cords to floor. Some bending to floor level. No special electrical knowledge needed. Kevin Niemi will be responsible. Please arrive by 8:30 a.m. Need: 4 people. Already signed up:

Job description: Stay near the front of the building and greet people who arrive to set up exploration stations. Provide them with their supplies and information, help them find their location, and generally facilitate. Please arrive at 9:00 a.m.Need: 2 people. Already signed up:

Job description: Blow up and hang balloons, streamers, banners etc. Hang way-finding signs. Hang station signs on poster stands, once they are up, at appropriate locations. Renee Meiller will be responsible. Please arrive by 10:00 a.m. Need: 4 people. Already signed up:

Job description: The program committee is providing single - use table covers and table skirts. Install these on all the tables involved in the event, before it opens. Must happen after table set up. Tricia Dickinson will be responsible. Please arrive by 10:00 a.m. Need: 6 people. Already signed up: 
Distribute and hang fiberboard panels       Back to top      Sign up
Job description:  The poster stands will contain a lightweight 4 by 8 foot fiberboard panel, hung by means of plastic tie-down strips. These panels must be distributed to the sites around the building and hung from the frames using plastic tie-down straps. This must be timed between poster stand setup and the time the Station developers start setting up. Rob Ricchi will be responsible. Please expect to start at 10:30 a.m. Need: 5 people. Job description: Stand or sit by the entrance and count humans as they come in, using a mechanical clicker. One always on duty during entire event. Please arrive for this task by 12:45 p.m. Need: 3 people. Already signed up:

Job description:  Administer short survey to attendees, evaluating the event. Encourage people to sign up for science events mailing list. (online form) Make sure computers are working and accepting the information properly. Sonya Brown will have responsibility. Starts at 12:00 p.m.Need: 3 people. Already signed up:

Wear a special greeter name tag, greet people coming in, hand them the program brochure, answer questions, circulate in crowd and facilitate. No responsible party. This duty runs 1-4 p.m. Need: 6 people. Already signed up:

Job description: Circulate throughout the event, visiting the exploration stations and making sure everything's running right. Volunteers for these two positions should be able computer users and problem-solvers. You should expect to be on this from Noon until 2:00 p.m.Need: 2 people. Already signed up:

Host Spectaculars (Liaison)       Back to top      Sign up
Job description: There will be three big shows at the April 3 event, in three different lecture halls. All will involve some degree of complexity and setup. While each show will bring its own crew, one volunteer will be assigned by the committee to be liaison with each show. Greet them when they arrive, and facilitate them wherever possible. Please be available for this duty 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Need: 3 people. Already signed up:

Job description: After the show, take down the tables, dispose of the covers and skirts, and stack the tables where physical plant expects to find them. Thus duty runs from 4:00 p.m. until done. Need: 4 people. Already signed up: 
Poster stand take down       Back to top      Sign up
Job description: After the show, take down poster stands. Separate and stack fiber board. Take Engineering's poster stands down to basement and place on rack. Bundle and stack Biotech's poster stands for loading and transportation back to Biotech. Thus duty runs from 4:00 p.m. until done. Need: 4 people. Already signed up:

Job description: After the show, take down, collect and properly stack all the chairs from physical plant. Thus task runs from 4:00 p.m. until done. Need: 2 people. Already signed up:

Job description: After the show, pick up all the electrical cables and properly coil and stack them for return to wherever they came from. Remove all tape from the floors. Thus duty runs from 4:00 p.m. until done. Need: 2 people. Already signed up:
