Basic Briefing |
- Science Expeditions is a month-long series of science outreach events on the
University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for the general public, first held in April, 2003.
- In 2006 our Science Expeditions Kickoff event is Saturday, April 1 from 1 to 4 PM at the Engineering Centers Building at
Breese Terrace and University Ave. and possibly other satellite venues on campus. See the
events list for details as events are added.
- Science Expeditions is a perennial event, and builds on the experience gained through the
Sesquicentennial Open House in 1999 and
the Campus Open House in 2000, as well at two
years of Science Expeditions. It is partially funded through a grant from the Babcock Foundation.
- Science Expeditions is produced and coordinated by Science Alliance, which is an
informal confederation of groups and individuals interested in science outreach, most of whom work on the
UW-Madison campus. You are invited to join Science Alliance by signing up at this website's
registration page. Once signed up and logged in, you can view the
roster of Science Alliance team members, arrange to volunteer
or just stay informed by being on the email list.
- Venue Matters. In its third year, Science Expeditions will focus on projecting an even clearer picture of the people,
places and programs on campus dedicated to sharing science with the public in communities across Wisconsin.
- We will also help organize a limited number of new special events in April 2006.
- Researchers and outreachers of all flavors are encouraged to participate. For information on including a science outreach
event scheduled for April 2006 for promotion as part of Science Expeditions 2006, please contact
Tom Zinnen at 608/265-2420.
(From bench to field, from ingenuity to imagination, from controlled experiment to bioethics, all aspects of science and science outreach are welcome.)
- A key building block of several of the events will be Exploration Stations. Exploration Stations are self-contained science
outreach booths/displays/demonstrations that focus on participatory informal learning. Visitors to exploration stations are
encouraged to feel, touch, smell, handle, manipulate, view, hear and otherwise use their senses to encourage engagement. For a
briefing on Exploration Stations, follow the link.
