Volunteer Call for Family Horticulture Day

April 30, 2005

The inaugural Family Horticulture Day will be Saturday April 30 from 10 to 2 at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station (WMARS) in collaboration with Dane County Master Gardeners and Dane County 4-H youth and adult volunteers.
Volunteers for family horticulture days will have plenty of opportunities to make unique contribution to this exciting event. In addition to need the usual help with setting up and taking down the event, we need dozens of people to volunteer to be puzzle-givers at exploration stations that will be included in the event. The exploration station is a booth where visitors are invited to explore science and learn about scientific ways of examining questions. Puzzle-givers are people who help visitors to exploration stations do their exploring -- puzzle-givers coax, cajole and coach visitors, but they do not have to be experts! We've successfully used sixth-graders as puzzle-givers at previous events.(Follow the linked words 'exploration station' to learn more about the idea.)
If you volunteer to be a puzzle-giver, you will go to an online page to sign up; as soon as you fill out the form there, you will be listed with the event (exploration station) you volunteered for. You will be expected to attend one training session of two hours, either at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station, UW-Madison's Genetics Biotechnology Building or at a third venue chosen by Dane County 4H or Dane County Master Gardeners. You will be asked to choose, online, which training session you will attend. The dates for these training sessions have not yet been set.
On April 30, you will need to be at the West Madison Agricultural Research Station during at least the 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. period of the Family Horticulture Day.
Before signing up as a volunteer, please read the following instructions. Most of the volunteer signup form is basic contact information like your name, your complete email address and so forth. There are two pull-down menus that need clarification, and you will be asked to choose a password.

You can choose what you volunteer to do:

Pre-event set up

You may need a password to come back to this site to see your volunteer assignment
We could assign you a password, but you might have trouble remembering it. It's probably better that you choose a password you might have a better chance of remembering. You can use any combination of numbers and letters. Remember that if you use upper-case and lower-case letters, you will have to use the same case when you come back to use your password next time.
