Science Alliance 2006 FAQ

What is Science Alliance?
Science Alliance is a loose coalition of people, most of whom are working in science outreach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and some of whom are outside supporters, and all of whom are dedicated to science outreach. Through better coordination, sharing of ideas, an mutual publicity and communications efforts, Science Alliance seeks to give UW-Madison the maximum outreach bang for its bucks.
How can I get on the list? How do I join?
To get on the list, or join Science Alliance, you go to http://www2.biotech.wisc.edu/alliance/register.php (just click) and fill out the simple form. If you have a ".wisc.edu" e-mail address, you're automatically listed. If you use any other e-mail address, your registration will be handled by a person and will take a day or two. [This is done to exclude spammers. Friends with non-".wisc.edu" e-mail addresses are welcome.]
Can I be a "passive" member of Science Alliance and just watch what's going on?
Sure. But take care. You may find yourself getting involved.
What does Science Alliance do?
Our biggest project is the annual Science Expeditions month-long series of public science outreach events in April, beginning with a multi-site public kickoff event at the beginning of the month. Science Expeditions 2006 kicks off on April 1, 2006. But we sponsor other events at other times of the year. The whole idea is to engender more cooperation and synergy in science outreach.
Can Science Alliance fund my outreach project?
Probably not. Science Alliance receives very modest funding to support Science Expeditions, and can usually offer participating organizations an extremely modest payment [$200 in 2005] to assist in setting up exploration stations during Science Expeditions. But other than that, Science Alliance has no funds of its own. Generally, groups and individuals cooperating with Science Alliance are funded in some other way to do outreach already.
Who can participate in Science Alliance? Do I have to be on the faculty?
Anyone can participate in Science Alliance. Most, but not all, participants are in some way associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Many undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs and academic staff participate.
Can I ask a question that will be answered on this page?
You betcha. Fire away.
